Colombia: Green Hydrogen for a Successful Energy Transition

Between July 2023 and March 2024, the Federation of German Industries (BDI), together with the World Energy Council Germany, is cooperating with the business association Asociación Nacional de Empresarios de Colombia (ANDI) in Colombia as part of a short-time project.

The aim is to strengthen the association in developing the potential for the production and export of green hydrogen in the La Guajira region. Furthermore, the focus is on strengthening the partner association's institutional capacity to advise its member companies on initiating business with national and international companies.

Colombia is one of the most economically dynamic and, with over 50 million inhabitants, most populous countries in Latin America. Due to its proximity to the equator, the country has favorable geographical and climatic conditions as well as great potential for the production of renewable energies. In addition to enormous wind and solar resources, particularly in some coastal areas in the north, such as La Guajira, Magdalena or Atlantico, the country has considerable hydropower potential, which is why the production of renewable hydrogen is particularly suitable. Today, 70 % of Colombia's electricity is already generated by hydropower. In contrast to other potential hydrogen exporters (e.g. Australia, Chile, Gulf states), Colombia has far above-average freshwater resources, which are essential for the production of hydrogen. At the same time, Colombia, Germany and numerous other countries are pursuing a successful energy transition.

This is where KM comes in and is conducting a pre-feasibility study on the production, transportation and export of renewable hydrogen in and from Colombia. In addition, the project partners are aiming to network relevant stakeholders on renewable hydrogen from politics, business and society in Colombia and Germany and to initiate contacts between the partner association ANDI and national and international companies.
