German industry promotes good environmental and working conditions in Ghana

In a PartnerAfrica project, the German business association Unternehmer Baden-Württemberg e.V. (UBW) has been working successfully with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana since 2021. The project, which was successfully completed in February 2025, aimed to enable AGI and KNUST to support the transition of Ghanaian industrial companies to greater sustainability and competitiveness through specialized services and educational opportunities. The project was implemented as part of the special initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The integration of adapted training and continuing education programs based on traditional and e-learning methods supplemented the existing educational offerings at KNUST. A total of 434 students took part in these new courses, 246 of whom graduated with certification. This not only expanded the range of existing courses in the field of sustainability, but also enabled students to implement innovative practical projects in numerous Ghanaian companies. These projects directly implemented sustainability measures and contributed to the improvement of working and environmental conditions in Ghanaian industry.

One particular success of the project is the establishment of a sustainability cluster at AGI, which now comprises 109 companies. This platform, analogous to UBW's Plattform Umwelttechnik e.V., offered training courses on critical topics such as environmental management, energy efficiency and occupational health and safety in companies, in which 213 specialists received further training. This expanded AGI's service portfolio and strengthened the acceptance of sustainable practices in the Ghanaian economy.

Thanks to the constructive cooperation of the Ghanaian partners and the German support, the PartnerAfrica project has even exceeded its objectives in many areas. The transnational cooperation created in the field of sustainable industrial development will continue beyond the end of the project.
