From January 2020 to September 2023, the BGA supported four Ghanaian fruit and vegetable associations and an umbrella export association as part of a first PartnerAfrica project, financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project aimed to strengthen the performance of the farmers' associations so that they can contribute to more high-quality exports from Ghana and thus to a stabilisation and increase in agricultural income. This was done primarily through the development of business models in all partner associations, which have a direct benefit for the members and enable sustainable income for the associations.
Contrary to the rather broad approach of the first project, the new project is to focus on the three associations and their member companies that have proven to be particularly committed and whose products show special export potential (pineapples, sweet potatoes, mangoes). For these products, quality and transparency in the supply chains are to be further increased and the use of bio-fertilisers as a preliminary stage to organic production is to be tested.
Furthermore, women in agriculture as producers and entrepreneurs in processing are to be supported in a targeted manner in improving the quality and quantity of their products, thus increasing their export potential. This is to be done in cooperation with the above-mentioned associations, which are to be strengthened in consolidating and further expanding their advisory and training services for their members.
