Myanmar: Center for Female Garment Workers

The newly opened Hlaing Thar Yar Women's Centre, which is run by ONOW, an NGO, has been offering four training courses for textile workers and former textile workers since September 2021 in order to strengthen the economic resilience of garment workers due to Covid and the military coup: business start-up and financial literacy courses, computer and sewing courses were used by 235 participants, of which 205 were women (87%). The centre was supported by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Garmet workers were able to receive concrete support at the CTUM Women's Center in Myanmar from May 2017 until the military coup on 1 February 2021. During this time, 4,685 participants took part in training on workers' rights, computer and sewing courses and hotline as well as legal advice. Afterwards, the women's centre had to be closed because CTUM was persecuted as an opposition by the new government.

The sequa-FABRIC project ended on 31 December 2022, but was able to secure the continued existence of the Hlaing Thar Yar Women's Centre. From 1 January 2023, seamstresses will be able to meet there and attend training courses again. The centre will continue to be run by OHOW, but will now be financed by the European Union.
