Morocco: sequa supports 35 SMEs and creates 391 jobs

After a 19-month run, sequa successfully finished the SME Support Scheme in Morocco. As part of the special initiative ‘Decent Work for a Just Transition’ (SI Jobs) implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), sequa supported 35 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in boosting their competitiveness, tapping into new markets and generating sustainable growth. The programme led to the creation of 391 new decent jobs, reached 204 participants through training courses and mobilised additional investment of just under 600,000 EUR.

The project combined various support measures. These included the provision of machinery and equipment, technical expertise from national and international specialists, management coaching, and training programmes in areas such as financial management, strategy development, market development and organisational development.

The supported enterprises represented a wide variety of sectors, including food processing, the textile industry, information and communication technology, the environmental and circular economy, tourism, water management, as well as the cosmetics and agricultural sectors.

The results achieved underscore the programme’s impact. By the end of the project, a total of 391 new decent jobs had been created. In addition, the working conditions of 118 employees were improved. A total of 204 people took part in training and skills development programmes that strengthened both technical and entrepreneurial skills.

In addition to the direct support measures, the programme also succeeded in catalysing further investment. The supported enterprises contributed more than 31,000 euros of their own funds. Furthermore, as a result of the support, further internal and external investment totalling around 597,000 euros was mobilised. The project thus not only helped to strengthen individual businesses, but also promoted the development of local economic cycles and economic structures in various regions of Morocco.

With the successful completion of the project, the SME Support Scheme once again confirms the importance of targeted support for SMEs in creating jobs, improving competitiveness and ensuring the sustainable development of the private sector. The results achieved demonstrate how effectively individual business support can contribute to economic transformation.
