Uzbekistan: First application phase completed

The project “Future International Talents (FIT) for German Climate Businesses” recruits experienced skilled workers from Colombia and Uzbekistan for German skilled crafts companies. The skilled workers are committed to build a long-term career in Germany. Across nine pilot regions in Germany the project is implemented by the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH), the German Federal Employment Agency (BA) and sequa. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

The linguistic and intercultural preparation in Uzbekistan has already begun

In Colombia and Uzbekistan, there are various recruitment cycles in which skilled workers can apply. In the first recruitment cycle in Uzbekistan, 25 people were accepted – all of them have at least two years of a vocational qualification recognised by the Uzbek State in the profession in which they would also like to work in Germany. They also have at least two years of relevant experience in the respective profession. Since the beginning of June, the participants have been receiving targeted language and intercultural preparation so that they are well prepared for life and work in Germany. They attend a German language course up to B1 level* at the Goethe-Institut Uzbekistan. The fact that some candidates already have German language skills underlines that Germany is considered a particularly attractive destination for labour migration in Uzbekistan. The candidates are expected to be able to enter Germany from the beginning of 2026 and take up qualified employment in climate-relevant skilled crafts professions.

The current status of the project in Colombia

Language and intercultural preparation is also imminent in Colombia: 35 skilled workers will start their German course at the Goethe-Institut in Bogotá at the end of July. In the run-up to the course, skilled crafts companies had the opportunity to submit job offers to their responsible skilled crafts organisation.

Objectives and Key Research Questions

At an overarching level, the project is intended to help counteract the existing shortage of skilled labour in the skilled crafts sector and thus reduce one of the biggest obstacles to growth, competitiveness and future viability of the skilled crafts sector. Secondly, it aims to contribute to the long-term success of the energy transition and climate protection in Germany.

With regard to the revised Skilled Immigration Act, the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH), the Federal Employment Agency (BA) and sequa serves to pilot to gain knowledge on the practical effectiveness of two migration pathways defined in the act: The first is the so-called Skilled Worker Track, which allows professionals to enter Germany for the purpose of having their foreign qualifications officially recognised (Einreise zum Zweck der Anerkennung der Gleichwertigkeit). The second pathway is the newly introduced, so-called Experience Track (Erfahrungssäule).
